More decorated papers
21 April 2016
I just love this effect.
Neo colour waterproof wax crayons and brusho inks.
And this one below I really like.
It conjures all sorts of possibilities.
These last two I used an ink wash over the paper.
Not as effective in my mind as sprinkled dry brusho ink powder.
The shine is from the desk lamp - the photos were taken in the evening.
Decorated papers
19 April 2016
This moving lark is not conducive for any creativity - Open Studios is looming and not a lot is going on.
And it is just common sense!
Don't beat yourself up when things don't quite go according to plan - just do a few simple tasks.
One of the tasks that Melinda Tidwell suggests - make collage materials.
So that is what I have been doing lately - making some decorated papers.
I have been using some of the old maps. I rubbed the designs using Neo Colour water resistant wax crayons over plastic stencils - nothing special - and then used Brusho Inks for the colour.
These pages below come from the 'map book' and I just highlighted the map grid using the orange neo colour.
When I used Brusho Ink powders - I sprinekled dry powder onto the paper and then spritzed with water. It is a lovely random effect. The trick is not to be stingy with the water. The papers got quite wet and I left them overnight to dry.
And below, I used the same technique in the altered book, but the paper is very absorbent so the ink did not 'meander around the page' in the same way that it did on the map.
Altered Book
14 April 2016
Pages from the altered book.
Photograph of a beautiful portriat, snipped from a magazine so I cannot credit the artist.
Following my post about faces, another attempt, sketched quickly onto a bit of scrap paper using inktense pencils and blocks of colour. I prefer this to my last attempt. And this was very quick.
And finally, another picture snipped from a magazine, but this time I can credit Ed Kluz and on the right hand side building up a similar scene using collage.
On the move (again)
12 April 2016
It has been two years!
Two years since we moved into this 'home from home'.
And now I have to move again. And, truth be told, it is unsettling. This was confirmed at the beginning of March and it did rather knock me sideways a bit!
It's been a blast here. I have my own space and when colleagues stay I can tuck myself away, I have access to the countryside (though to be truthful the dog walks are not so good as my last place), we were able to dip our toes into the open studios last year and I have a house with 2 staircases!
And the relevance of 2 staircases?
When I was a child I always found the idea of a house with 2 staircases somehow quite magical and always wanted to live in one.
And, well it occurred to me that my wish has come true.
Ok not my actual 'home' - but my home from home and I reckon that's good enough. That's one to tick off the Bucket List!
And as well as herding three dogs I have also started to gradually pack up. I managed to get rid of one bed and take several boxes of books to Charity.
But this uncertainty is not good for creativity.
We have found somewhere else - not quite as amazing a house as this one, but at least I still have space for a studio.
So, it will be goodbye Winslow and Hello Milton Keynes.
When I am in photos will follow.

I am getting something done ....
10 April 2016
If you saw my last entry you will know that things have not been quite going to plan lately.
But I have managed to grab a bit of time in the studio.
Not only the small matter of a dog collision, but three dogs is hard work. And I have to keep washing the kitchen floor. They don't wipe their paws when they come in.
Anyway, a bit of work into the 'Orange' map/sketch book.
"Oranges and Lemons"!
In this case some mono printed tissue paper laminated over the original map, with bells drawn in (the bottom two adding water after the drawing, the top one is 'dry')
And here adding some Penhaligons tissue paper into an altered book I have been working on for a while. I am using Daler Rowney matt medium to stick this tissue paper in. It sticks well and by using a paper folder to ensure it it well tucked into the spine of the book, it provides a smooth and workable finish.
It's been one of those days .....
3 April 2016
You know the sort of day.
You get up in the morning, the sun is beginning to peep through, that first cup of coffee tastes just fabulous, the early morning treat of almond cantuccini biscuits tastes glorious and sets you up for the day.
And then - wham!
It all goes, as they say, belly up!
Or in my case 'shoulder' up!
I should explain!
If you have dipped into this blog for a while you may have met my dog - Gazza (also known as Gascoigne, Asbo dog etc.) He is now an old boy - 13 1/2 and if I am honest, beginning to slow down.

Well son No 1 also has a dog. Pigeon the Whippet. You will have met him before from time to time as well.
And Daughter No 1 also has dogs! She has 2 dogs. Koda and Lola. They too have featured before.
That's Koda in the front (big ginger boy) and Lola in Andy's arms. Small, cute etc. etc.
Well, for reasons too complicated to go into here, I am dog sitting Koda and Pigeon at the same time. (Lola has booked herself into another doggy hotel!)
And, well, Koda and Pigeon had a collision! And, to be blunt, Pigeon came off worst!
Much worst!
So much worst it involved a trip to the vet! And stitches! And stress!!
He has a spectacular shoulder injury!
And now my bank balance is considerably lighter, Pigeon is sporting a horrendous injury and my nerves are frazzled!
As you can imaging, not much time in the studio!
I cleaned the oven instead!
